                          WHILE READING THE NOVEL

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beloved is the type of novel that requires a minimum of two readings.
During the first reading, the students will need to concentrate on
unraveling the plot. Although a challenge, their efforts will be rewarded
by an interesting story. The following activities may help students with
this task.

  1. Keep a reading log in which questions are written and crossed out when
they have been answered through the reading or in discussion with
     another reader.

  2. Keep a reading log in which personal responses are written at the end
of designated sections of the book. These responses might include
     impressions, questions, predictions, analyses, associations,
criticisms, or anything the writer feels like recording.

  3. Meet periodically in small groups to discuss predetermined sections of
the book. Try not to read ahead of the group. The purpose of these
discussions is to figure out the storyline.

  4. Develop a time line of the events in the story.

  5. Keep a list of characters and explain their relationships.
